My work is inspired by the materials I find in my Detroit neighborhood. Most of the things I build are large and I need to have a lot of help to build them. I start with an idea, but more than anything else the specific materials help determine the final outcome. I get an incredible satisfaction from doing this for the following reasons: 1. I am not very big. There is probably a well known psychological condition to describe my desire to be bigger; to be taken seriously. 2. The materials I find are beautiful. 3. I'm proposing a 4th R: repurpose; use your imagination. I think a lot about respect and how it is earned, when it is deserved. I think about the working class and what can be accomplished when a collective uses its force to achieve a goal. I think about violence and what is culturally accepted and culturally unaccepted ways of expressing or discussing violence. I think about intimate violence; the kind you inflict upon yourself. I'm interested, most of all, on the female perspective of all of these things.
